Geotechnical Engineer

24-40 hrs, Amersfoort

Civil 7 is a young and growing engineering consultancy with an international focus in underground construction.  We are looking for a geotechnical engineering graduate for a near full-time position

(0.6 to 1.0 fte) to work in our office in Amersfoort and internationally.

Projects include geotechnical design of bridges, tunnelling for stations and design of foundations for high-rise structures. Work is expected to consist of 25 % project organisation, 50 % geotechnical design and 25 % business strategy and development. We support ongoing technical and professional learning, and also lateral development into adjacent fields like hydrology, structural engineering, traffic and tunnel safety.


Skills candidates must possess:

- great at planning and implementation;

- friendly, open and precise in communication;

- good analytical skills with interest and experience in finite element modelling;

- profile: MSc. Degree in geotechnical engineering or structural hydraulics. A focus on underground infrastructure is an advantage

MSc Thesis Geo-engineering

Deep soil mixing test site

(Amersfoort & Sweden)


We are looking for geo-engineering students with international ambitions that

wish to fulfill their Master programme from today.


Civil 7 offers students

- intensive weekly guidance by an experienced senior;

- real project and client, financed test site;

- responsibility and ownership of your project;

- part of the research period to be carried out in Sweden;

- insider view into a young engineering startup


The Swedish setting has cases of up to 80 m of very soft soils with ongoing settlements of over 15 mm/year (compared to Amsterdam: 3 mm/year). However, the modern technology of dry deep soil mixing has been shown to exceed expectations in terms of strength and stiffness within these conditions. In this research a DSM test site is under development (prior to construction of the Kvarnberget tunnel project). The capabilities of deep soil mixing are being expanded to underground construction in a manner never done before.

Work is assessed as 35 % soil mechanics, 35 % deep soil mixing and monitoring design and 30% organisational activity.


Candidates must possess the following skills:

- good analytically;

- pro-active, well presented and good communicator;

- experience in geotechnical or hydraulic engineering (4th year Masters');

- practical and "construction wise". Students having done their internship at a contractor or 'outdoors' will have an edge for this role.

MSc Thesis Geo-engineering

Shaft sinking for bridge foundations

(Amersfoort & Sweden)


We are looking for geo-engineering students with international ambitions that wish to fulfill their Master programme from today.


Civil 7 offers students

- intensive weekly guidance by an experienced senior;

- real project and client;

- responsibility and ownership of your project;

- part of the research period to be carried out in Sweden;

- insider view into a young engineering startup


The Swedish setting has cases of up to 80 m of very soft soils with ongoing settlements of over 15 mm/year (compared to Amsterdam: 3 mm/year). The economics of using supports made up of segmented piles of 65 m are to be challenged by the student. To this end 'semi-floating shafts' of around 10 m diameter are to be designed for shaft sinking. The student should look more broadly than just geotechnics and take into account risk, constructability, cost and construction time. 


Work is assessed as 35 % soil mechanics, 35 % foundation design and 30% cost/planning/constructibility.


Candidates must possess the following skills:

- good analytically;

- pro-active, well presented and good communicator;

- experience in geotechnical or hydraulic engineering (4th year Masters');

- practical and "construction wise". Students having done their internship at a contractor or 'outdoors' will have an edge for this role.

MSc Thesis Structural eng.

Innovation in bridge supports

(Amersfoort & Delft)


We are looking for a stuctural engineering student that wish to fulfill their Master programme

from today.


Civil 7 offers students

- responsibility and ownership of your innovation project;

- a visit to an international construction project;

- insider view into a young engineering startup



This research project involves development of a proof-of-concept of a new structural bridge support component specifically for foundations in very soft soils. Due to the promising nature of this idea, a non-disclosure agreement should be signed by the student prior to receiving further details on this assignment.


Work is assessed as 25 % structural design, 25 % materials design, 25 % fiddling/constructing and 25 % lab testing and interpretation.


Candidates must possess the following skills:

- good analytically;

- pro-active and independent;

- experience in structural or materials engineering (4th year Masters');

- practical building skills, i.e. "two right hands" (for constructing component in the lab)
